The show opened up with the lovely Martha Munizzi singing her hit, “Glorious”. The theme this week was “Divas of Song”, songs made famous by legendary female artists. The contestants are competing for some great prizes: a national recording contract with Zomba Gospel, a 2009 Toyota Camry, and a $300,000 prize package from Tide.

Let’s get started!

tashaSadly, Tasha was eliminated at the beginning of the show. First there was absolute silence, and then lots of tears! The four left are Crystal, Jermaine, Emily and Mrs. Shari.

crystalCrystal started the show off with “Wind Beneath My Wings”. In rehearsals Martha advised Crystal to not over-sing, to just let the message of the song come through. She took the advise to heart, because she gave a strong performance. The ladies of Mary Mary said that she sung from her heart and soul and she had the skill to go out and tell the world about God. BeBe took out his wallet and asked her how much money she wanted! He said he would gladly pay to hear her perform.

jermaine Jermaine sang “I Go To The Rock”. I liked this song because it took me back to old-time church music. Martha said that he had “cross-over” appeal. Tina said that he had a unique voice, but advised him to not get lost in the vocal acrobatics. He did have a lot of vocal movements, but that seems to be his style. I thought he sounded great. It nice to see a young guy singing for God. He could reach a lot of young people that wouldn’t otherwise be reached.

emilyEmily Gomez did a great job with “We Shall Behold Him”. BeBe said her performance was good, but he was waiting for it to go from good to great. I agree with Erica & Tina when they said that Emily’s heart screams the message in a gentle yet strong manner. Because her style is more laid back than her female competitors she kind of gets lost in the shuffle. However, you can see clearly that she is all about the message and it does come across in her presence and delivery.

ShariMrs. Shari sang “Testify” and she did just that! This lady needs her own show!! When she sang the portion of the song that said, “for God I’ll live, and for God I’ll die”, you knew she meant it.  After she finished her performance, she wanted to shout all over the stage, but she held her peace. Bebe said she had great depth of variety and talent.  Tina said that everything she sang, turned out well.

Kirk asked her who she wanted to thank, and that seemed to open the floodgates! She thanked her family and good friend for supporting her. She said her daughter, Lindsay, couldn’t be there but she wanted to speak into her life. She said, “I speak to the God in you, that it rise up and that everyody around you will be delivered, healed, and blessed. I need to speak into your life. I trust God with you.” She continued: “You have to bless God throughout your tears and pain. I made up my mind that I would live and not die. I bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. He is worthy!” That sister was testifying and preaching! She ended up dancing on the stage all by herself! Mrs. Shari, Mrs. Shari……………..

Well, this post turned out much longer than it should have. There are many differing opinions on whether or not gospel music should be in the competitive arena. I enjoyed the show and I would rather my family watch this type of show than some of “the other stuff” on TV and the big screen right now. Just my opinion.

The next show is Tuesday night before Thanksgiving. It would be a good show to tape and enjoy with the family on Turkey day. You can visit BET for more information on the contestants and to watch videos of their performances. Thanks for reading and I would love to hear your opinion on the show. The key to what we do in Gospel Music is the anointing,
it’s the presence of God. When you tap into that everything
just seems to come together.-
