New Gospel Music From Israel Houghton

Have you gotten your copy of “The Power of One” from Israel Houghton?? If not, ya gotta get it!

It’s a great album with something for everyone-it really does cross all ethnic and global boundaries. My kids love it–it’s a great gospel music CD to listen to in the morning and on the way to school.

I love all the songs on the CD but my favorites would have to be “Just Wanna Say” and “Power of One”.

The Houston Chronicle has a great article about Israel’s family, unique sound, and the new CD.

Some tidbits from the article:

–His mother is white and father Jamaican. His mother later married a white man and started a church.-“I was a black kid in a white family in a Hispanic church.”

–He calls his music “kingdom sound”.

–Christian artist tobyMac calls Houghton an inspiration.-“Both of us have always had one foot in black culture and one foot in white culture.”

–He likes to play Wii games with his 7-year old, Israel Jr. My kids would love it over his house!!

–He has performed biweekly at Lakewood Church since 2001 where he serves as a worship leader. According to Lakewood music director Brian Tankersley, Houghton brings a welcome spontaneity to Sunday worship and is not afraid to deviate from the planned program.

“It may show up as a spoken encouragement or scripture read between songs, or even Israel singing alone without the guitar. He is able to authentically roll with the punches as the moment and the mood of the Spirit leads.”

I can certainly attest to Israel shaking things up during worship. When he is part of the worship team, you can count on something different happening. My husband is in the choir and he says they have to really be on their toes when Israel is there.
