Classical Meets Gospel in Total Praise
Internationally Renowned Pianist Joseph Joubert Releases Collection of Classic Gospel Music Hymns
A recent review of a gospel music CD left me enjoying the music a lot more than the vocals. The singing was great and all, but for some reason the music (which happened to be piano) caught my attention. I was left wondering how wonderful it would be to have an entire instrumental CD filled with gospel music. And then guess what happened……….yep, I got an e-mail about the very thing I was wondering about. I love when God surprises me like that. 
Joseph Joubert’s CD, Total Praise, is filled with gospel music hymns we all know and love set to beautiful classical piano music. While I certainly don’t profess to understand classical terms such as scales, double thirds, double sixths, trills, and arpeggios, I love what they have done to my favorite gospel songs.
I love the story in the liner notes recounting the story of how Joubert came to transcribe his rendition of the gospel song “Amazing Grace”. After his 1994 performance of the song at a White House dinner hosted by President Bill Clinton, Russian President Boris Yeltsin asked to take the sheet music of the song back to Russia with him. Because it wasn’t transcribed at the time, Joubert had to ask for a tape of the performance to have it done.
When I played this CD in the car it even got my kiddies attention. They were surprisingly quiet and very attentive while listening to it. While the CD is very classical you can hear some blues and jazz thrown in which make for a wonderful surprise. Some of my favorite gospel songs on the album are “Total Praise”, “Amazing Grace”, “I Need Thee Every Hour”, and “His Eye is On The Sparrow”. Check it out, I think you will like it.
