Fred Hammond Talks About Influence That His Mother Had On His Life
Gospel Music Artist Fred Hammond Reflects On The Influence His Mother Had On His Career

The Dallas News has a great article on the influence that Fred Hammond’s mother had on his life.
Mildred Hammond was a single parent and a choir director and musician raising five children in an area right in the middle of Detroit’s gang territory. She was a nurse that worked double shifts at times to take care of her family.
She invested in Fred Hammond with a $400 bass guitar after the basic guitar she got for him went unused because of teasing.
“That $400 investment retired her,” the 48-year-old gospel music legend said recently.
It paid for her last days on earth and all the days between it. It inspired me to be a better musician, be a better singer. That investment made Fred Hammond. She paid like $30 a month for years. It paid one-thousandfold.”
The faith that Fred Hammond’s mother had in him eventually gave the gospel music world the “architect of urban worship”. Hammond started off at 20 years old playing bass guitar for the gospel music group The Winans. He later joined the Detroit-based group Commissioned as an original member and lead vocalist. I remember him most as a member of Radical For Christ, which won several Stellar and Dove awards.
Fred Hammond lost his beloved mother in 2007 at the age of 72 from breast cancer. He cared for her during her illness, which was a large part of the reason why he hadn’t released an album in three years until Love Unstoppable on September 29th.
The first single from Love Unstoppable, “They That Wait” with gospel music’s John P. Kee is currently #1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Songs chart.
You can catch Fred in Dallas, Tx where he is currently living. He is a member of T.D. Jakes Potter’s House church.
