A big congrats to Amber Bullock on being the 2011 Sunday Best winner!
The finale of BET’s popular gospel music competition was full of excitement and stellar performances.
Although the results episode happened to be on the same day as the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, the music and the hopeful mood of the show served to remind viewers of God’s love towards his people.
The show opened with VaShawn Mitchell singing [amazon_link id=”B003WDC3SO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]”Chasing After You”[/amazon_link]. He was joined a bit later on stage during his performance of the gospel song [amazon_link id=”B003WDC3MU” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]”Nobody Greater”[/amazon_link] by former Sunday Best contestants Zebulon Ellis and Jessica Reedy.

Gospel rapper Lecrae and Andy Mineo sung “Background”, one of my favorites from Lecrae’s [amazon_link id=”B00451Q2KC” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Rehab CD[/amazon_link]. I thought they did a good job, but I was more excited that Lecrae was even there. I think his appearance is a great look for Christian hip hop.
Shirley Caesar was a guest mentor this week along with regular mentor Kim Burrell. Caesar sung “You’re Next In Line For A Miracle”, “Sweeping Through The City” and “Jesus”. She gave us classic Shirley Caesar and I loved it!
There were more great performances from Yolanda Adams, Y’Anna Crawley and Rance Allen with his brothers and Paul Porter. I absolutely love Yolanda’s [amazon_link id=”B004XZ6J80″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]new song “Be Still”! [/amazon_link]
A big bright spot in the show for me was the celebration tribute by past Sunday Best winners Le’Andria Johnson, Crystal Aiken and Y’Anna Crawley in honor of Mahalia Jackson’s 100th birthday. This performance was bananas!! The way Le’Andria started with “Soon I Will Be Done” was epic! The ladies also sung “Precious Lord”, “Soon I Will Be Done” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain”. The riffy stuff at the end of the song was awesome. I loved how they played off of and complemented each other.
Angie Stone was in the audience and Kirk Franklin had her sing some of her popular song “Black Brother”. Cool moment in the show. Angie can sing!
Le’Andria Johnson sung the song “Jesus” from her [amazon_link id=”B005J57F9A” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]new CD, The Awakening of Le’Andria Johnson.[/amazon_link] Ok, I know I’ve said this before but I love, love to see Le’Andria perform live. She gives you that focused look and just lays it all out. She puts her entire heart out for God and the audience and I can appreciate that. After her performance Kirk prayed a special prayer for her. I also pray that God protects her heart and continues to bless her with the passion she has for gospel music.
Before the results were announced Andrea and Amber sung a wonderful rendition of the song “Moving Forward”. They both looked beautiful and complemented each other well on the song.
After a bit of fanfare, Kirk Franklin announced Amber as the winner. What a great moment! Confetti and all.
I’ve enjoyed this season of Sunday Best 2011. There were hiccups along the way, but I trust that the producers and powers that be are constantly working to make the show better and better with each passing season.
Judging from the comments and e-mails that I receive, Sunday Best is very, very popular with its viewers. I think it deserves the best. It looks like there will be another season according to Kirk Franklin’s twitter page.
Thanks for reading 1800Gospel during this Sunday Best 2011 season! I appreciate you guys. Let’s do it again next season. Sunday Best, out!
