I had a great time watching Season 5 of BET Sunday Best! Watching with my family and tweeting made for so much fun.
I just gotta say that the show keeps getting better and better! Everything was top notch. I appreciate having a clean show such as this to watch with the family. I know some were not able to watch because of the Direct TV stuff. I hope they straighten it out soon!
The show opened up on a great note with a celebration of Kirk Franklin’s 20 years in Gospel music. Remember, the mega hit, “Stomp” with Salt from hip hop duo Salt-n-Pepa? Well, Salt was there and she lit the stage up. Great moment!
The supremely talented Tamela Mann graced the stage with the hit Christmas song classic “Now Behold The Lamb.” Mali Music sung “Give Me That” and was joined on stage by Kirk Franklin. I really enjoyed this opening. Congrats to Kirk on 20 years of awesome Gospel music!
BET Sunday Best was full of great moments and some surprises. The top twenty did a great job. I was very impressed by two of the younger contestants. Alexis Spight and Joshua Rogers are both 17 or 18 years old and very talented! Alexis sung Vanessa Bell Armstrong’s “Nobody But Jesus” and was wonderful. She said that she was “obligated to serve God” because of where He brought her from. She talked about her family being homeless.
Joshua Rogers sung “Brand New Day” by Jonathan Butler and totally owned the stage. He did so much with the time that he had. I’m looking forward to hearing more from him.
Lois Blalock is 73 years old and she was something else! First of all she looked absolutely beautiful! Her rendition of “Please Be Patient With Me” was stellar. After she finished singing she proceeded to leave the stage and Kirk had to run and go get her. LOL! I was a little bummed she didn’t make the BET Sunday Best Top Ten.
The Dress. When Kimberly Walker hit the stage the first thing I noticed was her dress. It had an embellished red top with a long black bottom. It was quite unique. When CeCe mentioned Grand Ole Opry I lost it a little, but when Donnie McClurkin just came out and said he didn’t know why she had that big dress on I lost it. And then Kirk Franklin mentioned something about cowboy boots being underneath the dress. Too funny!! The dress aside, I thought her voice was unique and pleasant to listen to.
Interesting note. I read on twitter that contestant Susan Hedgepeth sung the hook on the hit song “Shorty Swing My Way” by KP and Envyi. Susan’s audition was great, but her Top 20 performance was a bit lackluster. I really thought she was going to bring it.
Ok, great show! Let’s see the Top 10. They are all good! Should be an awesome show next week. Join us on twitter at @gospelmusic.
