GMC to Present Exclusive World Television Premiere of How Sweet the Sound National Finale

The Gospel Music Channel will be bringing all the excitement of the How Sweet The Sound Best Church Choir competition to television. The world television premiere of the  finale will be aired on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 8:00 pm. Encores will be shown Thanksgiving night,  Thursday Nov. 26 at 9:00 pm, Sunday, Dec. 6 at 6:00 pm and 12 Midnight (All Times Eastern).

With Donald Lawrence as host, Lisa Kimmey-Winans as co-host, and Marvin Sapp as judge and performer, some of the best church choirs in America performed some of their best gospel songs before crowds for the chance to win up to $ 20,000 in cash and prizes in the regional event and up to $ 50,000 overall. The choir that won the grand prize was Atlanta West Pentecostal Church.

Gospel Music Choir Competition Names Best Church Choir In America

The Best Church Choir in America is Atlanta West Pentecostal Church! The choir was named after the grand finale in Detroit.  According to the How Sweet The Sound website, Atlanta West will receive $30,000 in cash and prizes along with the coveted title. The choir also won the V CAST People’s Choice Award.You can look for them to perform with gospel music artist Donald Lawrence at the Stellar Awards next year.

The finale was hosted and co-hosted by Donald Lawrence and Lisa Kimmey-Winans, and featured the gospel music talents of Marvin Sapp and Dorinda Clark Cole. The evening featured special performances by the Clark Sisters, Brother Hahz, Kurt Carr and James Fortune. The Remnant Concert Choir from Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., was named runner-up and received a cash prize of $15,000.

Atlanta West Pentecostal Church Choir plans to use the prize money to record a live gospel music CD in 2010 which will be their first recording. Brandon Frazier, music director for Atlanta West said, “How Sweet the Sound does everything first class. It’s been a once-in-a-lifetime experience participating and to win — I’m still taking it in. It’s an amazing feeling and has already opened so many doors for our choir.”

This wraps up a very successful 11 city tour for Verizon’s gospel choir competition. The best church choir search has exceeded expectations for it after receiving thousands of audition tapes that eventually was narrowed down to 11 regional competitions around the U.S.

“Now in its second year, How Sweet the Sound has been an opportunity to celebrate the unique ways music connects people within the community. We congratulate Atlanta West Pentecostal Church Choir and recognize the tremendous talent of all of the choirs that participated in this competition,” said Sikita Grayson, director of customer service for Verizon Wireless.

“We are delighted to be able to bring to the community such an uplifting event, and we have been inspired by the energy of the churches throughout the competition.”
