103 Years Old & Still Inspiring Others
“We had more obstacles to face than students do today. Obstacles make you strong. … Children today, it seems they have opportunities they don’t even recognize. Sometimes they don’t seem to appreciate them, that we’re leaving what little we had. When I think back to the obstacles my parents faced — some of them were insurmountable — I marvel that they could do so much when they had so little.”-Hazel Hainsworth Young
103 year old Hazel Hainsworth Young, was honored by Houston Independent School District for her 80 year career in education. She is the last living member of Jack Yates High School’s inaugural 1926 faculty.
After 90 years, Hazel Hainsworth Young still remembers her teacher father’s elegant handwriting, the crisp, starched white blouse that became a high school Latin teacher’s trademark, the library books that opened her mind to a wider world — in short, all the factors, great and small, that propelled her into an educator’s career that spanned eight decades.
Ms. Hainsworth reminds me of the teachers I had in school. They cared that you performed well in school and showed respect toward yourself and others.
Is there a teacher in your life that made a difference? Why not give them a call to say thanks?
