The Whispers: Same Sound, Different Message
New Gospel Music From The Whispers Has Its Own Unique Sound
I was awakened this morning by gospel songs from The Whispers on the radio. My hubby has it set for the Tom Joyner Morning Show and it comes on loud (very loud) every morning at 5:15 sharp.
This morning The Whispers was on the show promoting their new gospel music CD, Thankful. They played portions of the CD and the group talked about the inspiration behind it. Fred Hammond co-produced the CD, which is their first gospel music album and first major recording in ten years.
Someone laughingly commented that it didn’t have the typical gospel sound. And it doesn’t. At all. It’s the Whispers trademark R&B sound and if you like the music of the Whispers you will like the new CD.
Soul Track did a great job in explaining this:
The Whispers have clearly been contemplating a Gospel album for a few years, having put their toe in the water on the song “I Sing This Song For You” from their 2006 album For Your Ears Only. And, as was the case with the silky ”I Sing,” Thankful is Gospel made on the Whispers own terms.
In other words, don’t be looking for organ-dominated songs or lots of call and response. Most R&B artists who have made the Gospel leap have done so by transforming their style to a traditional, even formulaic, Gospel sound; the Whispers have instead made the Good Word come to them, dressing spiritual messages in the kind of adult soulful style that the group has been using for at least two decades.
This is an urban adult contemporary album very similar to For Your Ears Only except that the quartet is singing to Jesus rather than to their honey. Soul Tracks

Lots of new gospel music to purchase today!
First up is The Anointed Pace Sisters. Their video channel not only got me excited about the new release, but it has provided some great insight into their group and the making of the CD. The gospel song “If I Be Lifted Up” was the first single from the album.
I don’t really think of the Whispers as singing gospel music, so I’m eager to give this album a try. The mustaches on the two brothers are exactly as I remember them so, so many years ago.
I remember Lisa Page Brooks from her days with the gospel music group Witness. I know this CD will be awesome. Check out her Facebook page. Nice album cover! Very pretty.
My girl CeCe has been very busy. She’s got the new gospel music CD with BeBe and now this one.
Lots of new gospel music to choose from! What are your favorite gospel songs on these new albums?
